Today DoorDash released our first-ever economic impact report, revealing the economic activity generated by our platform and showing the positive impact that DoorDash has had on the restaurant industry since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The analysis further demonstrates our mission to empower local economies and provides a tangible look at how our platform impacts merchants, consumers and the communities we serve.
The report found that restaurant revenues and Dasher income generated on the DoorDash platform accounted for $13.2 billion in direct, indirect and induced economic activity in 2019 and that DoorDash can conservatively be estimated to have generated $6.9 billion in net new impact on the U.S. economy in 2019 that otherwise would not have existed. Further, every $1 spent on food on the DoorDash platform stimulated an additional $2.37 in overall spending in the economy.
In 2020, we have seen the twin public health and economic crises of the COVID-19 pandemic take an awful toll on many people and businesses, and we’re proud to be a platform that so many people have been able to turn to during these difficult times. In a survey of DoorDash customers, Dashers and merchant partners, we found that overwhelmingly restaurants rely on DoorDash to grow revenue and reach new customers (75 percent), and a majority of merchants felt that their business may not have survived the current crisis were it not for DoorDash. Some other key findings include:
The pandemic is far from over and people will continue to need opportunities with minimal barriers to entry and maximum flexibility. Parents need to be able to start earning money immediately while juggling schedules to assist kids with remote learning or to care for loved ones. Platforms like DoorDash provide that flexibility and a chance to make ends meet to millions of people.
We’re incredibly proud of our economic impact and grateful to further our mission to empower local economies by connecting consumers with the restaurants they love, supporting our merchant partners, and creating flexible work opportunities for Dashers. Particularly as our country continues to grapple with the COVID-19 crisis, we are honored to be a platform that has helped generate billions of dollars in Dasher earnings and new revenue for restaurants at such an important time.
