Standing with the Immigrant Community

DoorDash is deeply committed to building and protecting diverse, inclusive communities. This drives our work to ensure DoorDash provides access to equitable and low-barrier to entry earning opportunities for those who need it. This also motivates us to support immigrant and refugee entrepreneurs as they fulfill their dreams and enrich our communities with vibrant culinary traditions. Our CEO and co-founder, Tony Xu’s own family experience as an immigrant was a driving factor in his decision to found DoorDash and empower immigrant entrepreneurs. We’re proud that through DoorDash, customers across the U.S., Canada, and Australia can access and gain exposure to cuisines and products from many cultures and backgrounds.

As the United States welcomes a new Administration, it’s imperative that we stand up and call on leaders to reexamine policies and positions that require a new approach. Last week, DoorDash proudly joined together with a variety of other voices to call for bi-partisan leadership on immigration reform, including prioritizing a pathway to citizenship for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. As described by the Immigration Forum, DACA is a policy “aimed at protecting qualifying young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, temporarily shielding them from deportation and providing them work authorization with possible renewal every year.” You can read more about that statement and fellow signers here.

Signing this statement was the latest action, but it was part of our ongoing work in this space.

• Since 2017, DoorDash has opposed the so-called “travel ban,” including by supporting litigation brought by the International Refugee Assistance Project.
• In 2018, we spoke out in submitted comments to the Department of Homeland Security opposing immigration regulations that would have made it easier to detain children longer and under worse conditions.
• We later joined the Coalition for the American Dream, which has fought to preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
• We signed onto an October 2019 amicus brief before the U.S. Supreme Court, which recently held – consistent with the position DoorDash supported – that the DACA program had been ended improperly.
• We also signed onto a letter opposing a rule that would make certain immigrants who had received public assistance ineligible for a Green Card and citizenship and a policy that prevents U.S. asylum-seekers from working while their cases are being adjudicated.

We are focused on working with policymakers, local leaders, and other stakeholders to speak out on issues that impact our community. This includes advocating for public policies that better serve immigrants and other groups who contribute so much to the United States. We recognize that there is always more to be done and we look forward to continuing to use our voice to make a meaningful difference.
