Helping DoorDash Customers Reduce Waste with Reusable Packaging

In 2023, we enabled over 180,000 orders with reusable packaging globally across the countries DoorDash and Wolt operate in. In the United States, we’re working to grow that number in partnership with DeliverZero.

We’re proud to help customers around the world get what they need, when they need it – and increasingly – with less waste.

Pollution from single-use packaging waste is growing, impacting our planet and the communities we live in. Packaging is a necessary component of restaurant delivery and takeout, which is why we’re helping merchants transition to more sustainable packaging solutions. Because we work with merchants and customers in communities around the world we are uniquely positioned to address the challenge of packaging waste in a meaningful way. Our aim is to make the sustainable choice the easy choice – and we’re eager to work with customers to make this a reality.

In 2023, we enabled over 180,000 orders with reusable packaging globally across the countries DoorDash and Wolt operate in. In the United States, we’re working to grow that number in partnership with DeliverZero. DeliverZero packaging is designed to be returned and reused up to 1,000 times, eliminating waste and reducing emissions associated with packaging production. Reusable containers bring other benefits for merchants and customers– in many cases foods stay better insulated to be delivered at the temperature they are best enjoyed at.

“At Humbowl, we’re all about taking the next step to create healthier and more sustainable eating practices. By offering DeliverZero through DoorDash, we are reducing our packaging waste and helping our guests minimize the environmental impact of their orders,” Eric Wright, Humbowl, Berkeley.

DoorDash customers can try out reusable containers when they order from select restaurants in Denver, Boulder, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York City, and Hudson County, New Jersey. In these cities, customers can search “DeliverZero” in the DoorDash app to see local restaurants offering reusable container packaging on their menu. Ordering your food in reusable containers is easy:

1. Select a restaurant: Search “DeliverZero” in the DoorDash App or try one of our local partners like Brine (NYC), Cavany Foods (NJ), Hijo de su Madre (LA), Chook (Denver), New Dehli Restaurant (Bay Area).

2. Add Menu Item: Add the DeliverZero menu item to your order (prices vary and are set by the restaurant). You only need to add the item once, regardless of the size of your order.

3. Receive your order: Your order will be packed and delivered in reusable containers.

4. Return your containers: Within 24 hours of placing your order, DeliverZero will reach out with return instructions. You can also find return instructions on DeliverZero’s website.

Try it out, send us feedback through the app and help us understand how together we can make reuse easy and delightful. Merchants who want to try reusable containers at their restaurants can sign up and get their first month of packaging free here

Our climate programs go beyond packaging waste – we’re also working to address emissions generated from our operations and deliveries. For more information on our 2023 climate progress, you can visit our sustainability update.
